DTG Printing vs Screen Printing

DTG Printing vs Screen Printing

We are pretty sure that you have already researched what DTG and Screen printing is and maybe you already have an idea of what is the difference between them. But we believe that visualization is the key. So we thought of creating a comprehensive table where you can see the pros and cons to each method and decide what is better for you!

Before we list all of the positives and negatives, we would like to give a few definitions, so the picture is completed.

What is DTG Printing?
DTG printing involves the use of a digital printer to apply ink directly onto the fabric of the apparel you’re customizing.

What is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is the classic, tried-and-true method of pushing ink through a woven mesh stencil onto the fabric.

DTG Printing

Screen Printing

Pros

  • Better option for small batches and one-off pieces (orders of less than 100 pieces)

  • Maximum detail in design that is easily customized

  • Extensive color options: DTG is printed using a digital printer, it has less color limitations than screen printing, which allows for more versatility since you are not required to match colors by inks and pantones

  • DTG prints colors more accurate to the original art file. DTG will match the artist’s original colors

  • DTG uses a printer to spray the ink into a garment

  • All of the designs in a batch can be unique

  • DTG can more accurately depict details without the compromise of knocking a design down into a certain number of colors. This particularly favors heavily colored and illustrated designs, gradients, and even photography

  • Minimal upfront investment

  • Most third-party printers have no order minimums for DTG products, so you don’t have to worry about keeping stock. This printing method also enables businesses to use printing services on-demand

  • Cost effective for large batches (100 pieces and more) with just a few limitations

  • The more product ordered, the   cheaper they are. Screen printing can average 1,000 garments and upwards per hour

  • Saturation is much higher in screen printing

  • Halftones with higher frequencies can be achieved nicely.

  • Screen printing layers the ink on top of the fabric

Cons

  • Not cost effective for extremely large batches

  • The DTG printing process is slower than Screen printing when it comes to huge orders

  • Simple designs and shapes are all that can be printed

  • Setting up the process can take a lot of time (up to a few days)

  • You have to order in bulk

  • Narrow number of colors (up to 8) and less cost effective the more colors used

  • Screen printing has to find the closest pantone match which can cause a bit of variation in design

  • Large upfront monetary investment

  • One design per batch

  • It’s unsustainable in the long run, especially if you want to offer a variety of colorful designs

The most important things to consider when choosing between them:

  • Are there fine details and/or many colors you want to incorporate? Or is it a simple design with only a few colors?
  • What is the size of the order – is it quite large or rather small?
  • Are you willing to invest in the stock upfront?

Do not hesitate to share it with your friends, colleagues, or followers!

How to care the DTG printed t-shirts

How to care the DTG printed T-shirts

It is no secret that clothes are often made of such materials that require a lot of care. And DTG shirts are no exception.

There are a few precautions that we want you to know before washing your DTG printed shirts. Those tips are easy to follow and won’t take a lot of time and thinking before applying but if you want your shirts to remain wearable and preserve the artwork we’d love to recommend you the following tricks.

First of all, it is best to wash your tees inside-out. It may be obvious but it is definitely one of the most important tips on the list. You can also use the zippy-bags for the delicate materials. This helps in preserving the ink on the fabric as well as protects the fabric itself from rubbing against other clothes while washing.

As to the washing machine settings, it is advised to go for cold water temperature and gentle cycle. Use mild laundry detergent and never use bleach. If you want to be 100% sure that your shirts will not be damaged after the washing cycle, separate whites and colored shirts as well.

Do not put your t-shirts in the drier, let them dry naturally (air-dry only). The heat from the drier accelerates the deterioration of the ink and the clothes can act unpredictably when being put in the machine.

How to avoid Sun staining on your pretreated colored shirts

Pretreatment is one of the key elements in DTG printing. It is designed to help the white ink sit on top of the shirt. The whole process implies using a specific solution and curing it before applying the ink. Pretreatment is commonly used to print full-colored images on t-shirts of different colors.

However, you should be careful with wearing colored garment right after the printing. It is widely recommended to wash your colored shirts or any piece of clothing before putting it on. If worn without washing there is a huge risk of sun staining. It happens to all of the garments, however, the most noticeable are light-colored shirts.

Such stains are impossible to get rid of. This is why we strongly advise washing any colored piece of clothing before exposing it to direct sunlight. This way your clothes will remain high-quality and will be safe to wear at any time of day or night.

Of course, with years of wearing your clothes will eventually get pilly and worn (duh!). But with those tips, you will make their lifespan bit longer and enjoy wearing your favorite designs for a few more years!

Git Merch

Git Merch: the best T-shirts for GitHub users

We have a dream, We want to help people express themselves by wearing personalized clothes.

We really like coders, they all are adding values to our life and changing it, especially if we are talking about open source teams.

It’s hard to describe how much values coders adding every day, but Github has a perfect tool to visualize it. It’s the contribution map. A unique snapshot of the whole year of work of each programmer.

From now everyone can bring his snapshots of intellectual property to the material world (and spread knowledge about it). Every GitHub user could print a t-shirt with his own contributions map and proudly wear it to show how cool it to be a creator of the future.

And even if you haven’t made a contribution in years, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Our awesome graphic tees are the perfect choice to wear to your next geek party!

Why Merch38 deals with DIRECT TO GARMENT (DTG) PRINTING

Why Merch38 deals with DIRECT TO GARMENT (DTG) PRINTING

Merch38 is the leader in printing personalized merchandise for gaming, online services, and many other types of customers. We provide a way for our customers to produce clothing that is exclusive, original, and practically designer quality.

Our flexibility, individualized approach to customers, short lead times, precision in implementing your design mockup, and of course the high quality of the merch itself would not be possible without one of the world’s most cutting-edge technologies—digital textile printing.

What makes digital textile printing so special for us? And why do we prefer using it over conventional screen printing?

DIGITAL TEXTILE PRINTING TECHNOLOGY

Direct printing on t-shirts is done using natural fabrics. The technology allows us to convey up to 65,000 hues, make gradients, render extremely fine lines, and even print right onto seams. The digital method does not require intermediate steps and preparation—the subject is instantly sent to the printer.

The direct-to-garment (DTG) printer applies ink directly to an article of clothing by means of fluidics. This concept is similar to paper printing, with the main difference being the use of t-shirts instead of paper. The chosen design is printed directly onto the clothing with a specific printer that uses water-based inks that are absorbed by the shirt’s fibers.

To help you better decide which method to employ for garment printing, Merch38 has prepared a list of five main benefits of direct-to-garment printing over screen printing (SP).

1. NO MINIMUM ORDERS

One distinguishing characteristic of direct-to-garment printing is the ability to fulfill small orders without affecting pricing in any way. Because the DTG setup is completely digital, high-priced costs associated with screen printing are avoided, and single-unit or small orders are easy to produce. This also makes it ideal for sample orders, as well as for testing different designs and verifying the fine details of a graphic, the hue of a color, or even the quality of various components. Merch38 can then modify to your design as necessary.

2. SHORT LEAD TIMES

Direct-to-garment printing takes place in an instant. In the course of ten minutes, you can move from a design to a fully ready t-shirt, an amazingly quick turnaround for the printing industry. In the time it takes for a conventional SP operation to finish setting up, we can print your order, wrap it in a bow, and have it ready for the delivery man to pick up. Our typical turnaround time is only 1-3 days (depending on the complexity and size of the order).

3. UNLIMITED NUMBER OF COLORS

Direct-to-garment printing allows you to convey the full spectrum of colors upon your clothing. With conventional printing, colors within a design are differentiated and mixed immediately prior to the printing process. In DTG printing, the colors are mixed on the fly right inside the printer head. This means no painstaking color matching prior to printing, and no limits on hues and shading that you can accomplish. This technology really shines when you print photographs or other drawings that are rich in color and detail. As we love telling our customers: with DTG printing, any design is possible! Nowhere else can you find such a level of depth, detail, and color.

4. FLEXIBILITY IN DESIGN

Direct-to-garment printing for t-shirts produces the most minute details of a drawing to a photographic level of preciseness, which is almost impossible to achieve in a traditional textile screen printing process. It’s for this reason that Merch38 recommends digital printing as one of the most effective methods of reproducing a photographic image on a t-shirt.

5. LOSSLESS T-SHIRT PRINTING

In a short previous blog post entitled “Why we love Hanes t-shirts” we explained how the quality of these shirts are not compromised during direct-to-garment printing. The sealed surface superbly preserves the structure of the material, and the fabric is able to breathe and is not covered by any additional protective layers of film. The image is resistant to UV rays, which means it will not fade. And of course you can iron, crease, and wash your shirt like any other piece of everyday clothing.

You would be hardpressed today to find anyone who doesn’t have a t-shirt in their wardrobe—this article of clothing has been around since the beginning of the 20th century. Sixty years later, in the age of the “flower children,” print t-shirts came into fashion and everyone who desired could express themselves and proclaim their views to the world.

The Merch38 team believes that clothing should not “stay silent.” Develop the most spectacular designs, declare your hopes and successes, and create your own story…and we’ll be happy to help you bring your imagination to life.
